Accident Recovery Card
Tape this inside the bathroom cabinet. Read it on the bad day.
The 90-second routine
1
0–10 sec
Breathe.
Don't react big. Your face is what they'll remember more than your words.
2
10–30 sec
Move to bathroom.
Calmly: 'Let's go to the potty.' Even if it's too late, finish the routine there.
3
30–60 sec
Change clothes together.
Let them help. Body autonomy moment. No lecture.
4
1–2 min
Say the one sentence.
"Next time, we try to get to the potty. You're learning." That's it. No more.
5
2 min+
Move on.
Resume the previous activity. Praise the next attempt 10x more than you reacted to this one.
Hard rules
- ❌ Don't raise your voice or sigh dramatically.
- ❌ Don't ask "why didn't you tell me?" — they don't know yet.
- ❌ Don't make them stand wet while you clean.
- ❌ Don't punish or take away.
- ❌ Don't talk about it the rest of the day.
One thing to remember
Accidents are how kids learn the signal. If your child never has an accident, they can't learn what "full bladder" feels like before it's too late. Three to ten accidents in week one is right on track.
